Refunds & Returns Policy

Thank you for supporting The Storystead. Every order helps this little bookish space grow, and we want your experience to feel clear, fair, and thoughtfully handled.

This policy explains how refunds, returns, exchanges, shipping concerns, damaged items, and vending machine purchase issues are handled for books, mystery book packages, bookish merchandise, gifts, add-ons, and other products purchased through The Storystead.

📘 Overview

Most items sold by The Storystead are considered final sale, especially mystery book purchases, blind date book packages, consumable add-ons, digital items, custom items, clearance items, and vending machine purchases.

Eligible non-final-sale items may be returned only if the return is requested within 14 days of delivery. To be eligible, the item must be unused, unread, undamaged, and in the same condition that you received it. A receipt, order number, or other proof of purchase is required.

Damage claims must be started within 48 hours of delivery and require photo proof of both the damaged item and the original packaging.

Please contact us before sending anything back so we can review the issue and provide return instructions. Items sent back without approval may not be accepted.

📬 Processing & Shipping Times

Orders are typically processed and shipped within 2–3 business days. Business days do not include weekends or holidays.

Shipping times may vary depending on the carrier, destination, weather, holidays, or other delays outside of The Storystead’s control.

📗 Mystery Book Purchases

Mystery book purchases, including A Story for Your Journey and other blind date book packages, are considered final sale. Since the surprise is part of the product, mystery book purchases are not eligible for return, refund, or exchange due to buyer’s remorse, duplicate ownership, dislike of the selected book, genre preferences, author preferences, trope preferences, spice level preferences, content preferences, or personal reading taste.

Duplicate ownership is not considered a defect. Because mystery book purchases are intentionally wrapped or undisclosed, we cannot guarantee that a customer will not already own the selected title.

We do our best to provide helpful clues, age categories, content notes, spice levels, tone notes, and general labels before purchase, but the exact title remains a mystery by design.

Mystery book purchases may only be reviewed for refund, replacement, or store credit if the item arrives damaged in transit, defective, incorrect due to our error, or missing listed items.

📕 Labels, Clues & Reading Preferences

Labels, clues, age categories, spice levels, tone notes, sensitivity notes, trigger warnings, and content notes are provided as general guidance only. Reading experiences are personal, and these labels do not guarantee that every reader will interpret the book the same way.

Returns or refunds are not offered because a customer dislikes the book, already owns the book, expected a different story, disagrees with a label, or finds that the book does not match their personal reading preferences.

📚 Books & Non-Mystery Items

Non-mystery books and eligible physical items may be returned within the 14-day return window only if they are unused, unread, undamaged, and in resellable condition.

Items that have been read, written in, damaged, stained, altered, or used after delivery may not be eligible for a refund.

If a customer chooses to return an eligible item that is not defective, damaged, incorrect, or flawed due to our error, the customer is responsible for return shipping costs.

🔖 Remainder & Overstock Marks

Some books sold by The Storystead are purchased new from a variety of publishers, distributors, wholesalers, retail outlets, and overstock sources. Some of these sources may mark overstock or remainder books with a small dot, line, or mark on the page edges.

These marks are not considered damage, a flaw, or a sign that the book has been used. Books with remainder or overstock marks are not eligible for refund, return, exchange, or store credit based on the presence of that mark alone.

📙 Non-Returnable Items

Some items cannot be returned or refunded unless they arrive damaged, defective, incorrect, or missing due to our error. Non-returnable items may include:

  • Mystery book purchases and blind date book packages
  • Gift cards
  • Digital downloads or printable products
  • Personalized, custom, or made-to-order items
  • Clearance, final sale, damaged-discount, or deeply discounted items
  • Food, drink mixes, tea, candy, snacks, or other consumable add-ons
  • Vending machine purchases, except when reviewed for machine error, failed vend, duplicate charge, damaged item, or incorrect item
  • Items with remainder, overstock, publisher, distributor, or retail marks on the page edges
  • Items that have been used, read, damaged, written in, stained, or altered after delivery
  • Items returned without approval or outside the return window

🍵 Consumable Add-Ons

Consumable add-ons, including tea, drink packets, candy, snacks, or similar items, are final sale and cannot be returned.

If a consumable add-on arrives damaged, opened, missing, or incorrect due to our error, please contact us so we can review the issue.

🎨 Handmade, Wrapped & Small-Batch Items

Some items may be handmade, hand-wrapped, printed, sublimated, assembled, or packaged in small batches. Minor variations in placement, color, texture, wrapping, or finish are normal and are not considered defects.

If an item arrives damaged, defective, incorrect, or significantly different from the listing due to our error, please contact us so we can review the issue.

📦 Damaged in Transit

If your order arrives damaged in transit, please contact us within 48 hours of delivery at thestorystead@gmail.com.

To review a damage claim, we require photo proof of the damaged item and the original packaging, including the outside mailer or box when possible. This helps us document shipping damage and determine the best next step.

Damage claims submitted after 48 hours, or without photos of the item and packaging, may not be eligible for refund, replacement, or store credit.

If the issue is approved as shipping damage or an error on our part, The Storystead will cover reasonable return shipping costs when a return is required.

📒 Incorrect or Missing Items

If your order is incorrect or missing listed items, please contact us as soon as possible at thestorystead@gmail.com.

Please include your order number, a brief description of the issue, and photos when helpful. If the mistake was due to our error, we will review the issue and determine whether a replacement, refund, store credit, or other solution is appropriate.

If the issue is approved as an error on our part and a return is required, The Storystead will cover reasonable return shipping costs.

📦 Marked Delivered, Lost, or Stolen Packages

The Storystead is not responsible for packages that are marked as delivered by the shipping carrier.

If your package is marked as delivered but you cannot locate it, please first check with household members, neighbors, your mail area, porch, mailbox, parcel locker, front office, or local carrier. Sometimes carriers mark packages delivered shortly before the package is physically placed or before it is found in a nearby delivery location.

We will do what we reasonably can to help review the situation, such as checking tracking information or helping confirm shipment details. However, suspected stolen packages should be reported to the appropriate carrier and to local law enforcement. For USPS packages, suspected mail theft may also be reported to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Replacements or refunds for packages marked as delivered are not guaranteed. If you provide a police report number or official theft report number, we may review the situation for a possible replacement, store credit, or other resolution at our discretion.

🏡 Shipping Address Errors

Customers are responsible for entering a complete and accurate shipping address at checkout.

If an order is delayed, misdelivered, returned, or lost because of an incorrect or incomplete address, The Storystead is not responsible for replacement or refund. If the package is returned to us, additional shipping charges may apply to resend the order.

📮 Refused, Unclaimed, or Returned Packages

If a package is refused, unclaimed, or returned to us by the carrier, the original shipping cost is non-refundable.

Additional shipping charges may apply if you would like the order resent. If an order is not resent, any eligible refund may be reduced by the original shipping cost and any return-related fees.

🕯️ Cancellations

Orders may be canceled only if they have not yet been processed, packed, shipped, or fulfilled. Once an order has been prepared or shipped, it cannot be canceled.

Mystery book orders cannot be canceled once they have been selected, wrapped, packed, or prepared for fulfillment.

📮 Return Shipping Costs

If a customer chooses to return an eligible item that is not defective, damaged, incorrect, or flawed due to our error, the customer is responsible for return shipping costs.

Original shipping costs are non-refundable for customer-choice returns.

If a return is required because of an approved damaged item, incorrect item, missing item, or another mistake on our part, The Storystead will cover reasonable return shipping costs or provide return instructions.

📙 Partial Refunds

In some cases, only a partial refund may be granted. This may apply when:

  • A book shows obvious signs of use
  • An item is not in its original condition
  • An item is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error
  • An item is returned after the eligible return window
  • Packaging, extras, or add-ons are missing from a returned item
  • Shipping costs, processing fees, or return-related costs are not refundable

💳 Refunds

Once your approved return is received and inspected, we will email you to let you know whether your refund has been approved or rejected.

If approved, your refund will be processed back to your original payment method. Processing times may vary depending on your bank, card provider, or payment processor.

Original shipping costs are generally non-refundable unless the return is due to our error, such as sending the wrong item or an item that arrived damaged and was properly reported within the damage claim window.

📓 Late or Missing Refunds

If you have not received an approved refund yet, please check your bank account or payment account first.

Then contact your credit card company, bank, PayPal, or other payment provider. Refunds can take several business days to officially post.

🏷️ Sale & Final Sale Items

Sale, clearance, discounted, damaged-discount, mystery, or final sale items may not be eligible for refund unless they arrive damaged, defective, or incorrect due to our error.

If an item is final sale, we will try to make that clear on the product listing.

🔁 Exchanges

Exchanges are generally offered only when an item is defective, damaged, incorrect, or when the same item is available as a replacement.

Because many books and wrapped mystery packages may be limited in quantity, an exact replacement may not always be available. In that case, we may offer a refund, store credit, or another reasonable solution at our discretion.

🎁 Gifts

If an item was marked as a gift and shipped directly to you, eligible returns may be refunded as store credit or handled through another gift-friendly option.

If the item was not marked as a gift, or if the gift giver had the order shipped to themselves first, any approved refund will generally be issued to the original payment method used by the purchaser.

📮 Shipping Returns

Please contact us before mailing a return. Return instructions and the appropriate return mailing address will be provided after your return request is reviewed.

We recommend using a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance for higher-value returns. We cannot guarantee that we will receive your returned item.

📚 Vending Machine Purchases

Items purchased from a Storystead vending machine may have different return limitations because they are purchased in person and may not include the same checkout records as online orders.

If there is a problem with a vending machine purchase, such as a damaged item, duplicate charge, failed vend, or incorrect item, please contact us with the purchase date, approximate time, machine location, item selected, payment method, and photos if available.

Vending machine refunds or replacements are reviewed case by case.
